Recollections of Childhood, 1996, watercolour 25" x 19".
A few years of my childhood were spent living with my grandparents. On Sundays we would walk to church down the hill and through the twitchel, the local name for an alleyway or short cut between houses and gardens. In this case the alley actually passed through the middle of a terrace of houses, with a bedroom above it and with wonderful echoing flag stones to walk on. This twitchel was also referred to in the village as "the Dark Entry". It was always a bit scary. This must have been the source of my subsequent delight in secret alleys and pathways.
