The Bird Jug, 1992, watercolour 20" x 28".
This large jug by the potter John Maltby is a favourite of mine and was the starting point for this composition. The sharp triangular shapes of the handle and spout and the leaning body of the jug accentuate the feeling of rushing air through which the bird flies. These triangular shapes reappear in the arms of the figures, the palette and brushes, the easel and the painting and the portfolio, giving a repeating rhythm across the picture.
