The Old Bridge in Spring, 1993, watercolour 24" x 19".
This, the previous and the following images are all different views of the medieval bridge crossing the river Thouet which runs through Gourge. The bridge was closed in the 1960s and a rather ugly replacement built to take traffic. Now the old bridge has been restored and is a pedestrian tourist attraction, even illuminated at night! I am intrigued by the triangular buttress-like forms which jut into the river to break the flow when it is in flood.
