The Secret Gate, 2016, oil 20 x 18 inches.
When we bought our French property, the gate was standing, solitary, in the middle of the front garden, then a field. We wondered whether the field had once been divided. Was it once the entrance to another property? A piece of sculpture? Behind the house, dividing the front garden from the back stood an equally mysterious wall, where, on close inspection we could see an opening had been filled in. When opened up again we could see the gate might fit there. In fact it was just a bit too small, but this was soon rectified by the village blacksmith. We still wonder what the strange lettering could mean..
