The Old Bridge, 2004, charcoal and Conté, 18 x 16 inches.
This drawing is a re-working of a watercolour I painted in 1993 (see The Old Bridge in Spring), using drawing to reflect the wintry season. I like the juxtaposition of angular architecture and natural growth, and a vista down two parallel walls plunging into depth is common in my work. This medieval bridge crosses the river Thouet at a large village called Gourge, a few kilometres from our house at La Bontellerie.
