Among the Vines, Hot Evening, 2007, watercolour 19" x 24".
In the heat of summer, the vineyard owner cuts back some of the long tendrils of the vines to make sure that the grapes are in full sun. The dry stone wall is in a particularly derelict condition here, and makes shapes that echo the undulating pattern of the vines. The heat on this particular summer evening was intense, and I have tried to suggest this in the treatment of the sky. The buildings are the back view of our house and outbuildings, and the French windows on the right are in my studio.
