Painting the Barn, 2014, charcoal and Conté 16 x 18 inches.
A few years ago, some drawings by Corot reminded me of the seductive qualities of black chalk or charcoal and red Conté chalk, and since then I have been drawing on a larger scale, and exhibiting these works as finished pieces in themselves. Indeed, rather than the drawings being preparatory for something else, the opposite has happened. I have revisited several of my favourite subjects and reinterpreted them as drawings. This drawing began from a quick sketch of the man painting the doors of our big barn attached to the end of the house. Working from this, a larger drawing was made outside to include the trees and also some invented additions such as the figure and the chicken to balance the composition.
