A Serious Conversation. 2014, charcoal and Conté 16 x 19 inches.
Our barn and the chemin between the gardens feature regularly in my work of La Bontellerie. Because of a cache of love letters which was found there, I always associate the barn with a philandering blacksmith who lived in the village fifty years ago (see The Love Letter). In this drawing, the main character is instead the ancient winter pear tree, whose intricate branches cried out for the linear and convoluted treatment that really only a drawing could deliver. Under the tree is perhaps an understated piece of human drama: do the tortuous writhings of the tree reflect anxieties below the surface or excuses being formulated?
